Atkinsons and Sriffnins “Three- Stage Processing Model”
Memories are stored in a three step processs of sensory memory, short term and long term memory

Sensory Memory
holds sensory ½ sec visual, 2-4 sec audiotry, if information is not transferred it will be lost.

Short Term Memory
holds perception for analysis up to 30 sec without rehearsal, 5-9 units, if information not transferred it will be lost. The ability ot hold and maniluate information over a breif perfiod of time, forgetting can occur rapidly, especially if dsitracted.

Longterm memory
permanent storage contains relatively permanent, unlimited

Multistore Memory
Explanation of how memory process work, you hear, see and feel many things but only a small # of it Is remembered (Arltinson and Stirffin)
Ionic Memory
Our fleeting photographic memory
Echoic Memory
Our fleeting memory for audiotry sensations
Long term example
facts you learned a few minutes ago
Long term example
personal memories that are a decade old
Long term example
skills learned in practice
Episodic Memory
Type of Long term memory, memories of specific events stored in sequence
Semantic Memory
Type of long term memory, General knowledge of the world, stored as facts, meanings or in category
Procedural Memory
Type of long term memory, Memories of skill and how to perform them
Explicit Memory (LTM)
Conscious memories of facts or events we actively try to remmeber
Implicit Memory
Memories that are unintentional and are brought to consciousness inadventenlty
How much memory does the average adult hold?
A Billion
Hippocampus
What is relevant to STM especially like a holding cell until memories can be transferred into LTM- especially explcit
Cerrebellum
What is responsible for implciit memory storage
Amygdala
What stores many memories tied to emotions
Memory
The persistence of learning overtime through the storage and retrieval of information,
Encoding
The proceeding of information into the memory system
Retrieval
The process of getting information out of memory storage
