kidbrooke

  • was previously a RAF base and primarily countryside, this changed as london began to grow

  • Ferrier estate, had a bag reputation on a national level, demolished in the early 2010s and late 2000s

  • replaced by kidbrooke village, a £1 billion project build with help from the berkley group

  • many previous residents of the ferrier estate can no longer afford to live here, displacement of communities

  • blackheath society has a very strong influence locally, prevented the A2 from being expanded into the area

  • totnes in the UK was the first to do this, focusing on reducing food miles by growing food locally, re-skilling the workforce and strengthening the economy through bottom up initatives

  • new acadmey has been built from nursery to sixth form

  • introduction of buses, new jobs in constrcution and torusim have created a multiplier effect

  • many previous residents can no longer affrod to live in the area, the diversity has diminsihed due to schools and homes being demolished to make way for the olympci park

  • 100k new jobs, the area is built on sustainbility althought bulidng cost 3.3 million tonnes of co2, wildlife relocated and parts for bulidng shipped overseas

  • the area needed regeneration after the closing of the docks which had led to high levels of unemployment. protests from locals as land had to bought from them

  • many areas that were built specifically for the olympic games in 2012 are now used by schools - locals have to pay etc. generated £9 billion

  • following rapid industrilisation, globalisation led to many companies no longer replying on the west and instead using the east as it is cheaper

  • this led to a massive spiral of decline, including high crime rates etc

  • due to the spiral of decline, many people could not afford to move out - bankruptcy. over 1 million moved out of the area

  • decline was worsened by severe racial tensions an riots + “white flight” to the suburbs.

  • attempting to move to a “rust belt of resilience” - focus on sustainable development and urban renewal
