Theme
The central idea or underlying message of a literary work, often exploring universal human experiences.
Conflict
A struggle between opposing forces that drives the plot, can be internal or external.
Point of View (POV)
The perspective from which a story is told, affecting how much the reader knows about events and characters.
1st Person Point of View
The narrator is a character in the story, sharing personal experiences using 'I' or 'we'.
Third Person Limited Point of View
The narrator is not a character but focuses on the thoughts and feelings of one character.
Third Person Omniscient Point of View
The narrator is all-knowing, revealing the thoughts, feelings, and actions of all characters.
Protagonist
The main character in a story who drives the plot forward, often facing the central conflict.
Climax
The highest point of tension in a story where the main conflict reaches its peak.
Characterization (Direct and Indirect)
The process by which an author develops characters through descriptions, dialogue, actions, thoughts, and interactions.
Flat Character
A character with limited development, often embodying a single trait or idea, typically a minor character.
Dynamic Character
A character who undergoes significant growth or change throughout the story.
Character Foil
A character who contrasts with another to highlight particular qualities of the main character.
Exposition
The introduction of a story where characters, setting, and the main conflict are established.
Plot
The sequence of events in a story, which includes exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that compares two unlike things directly, without using 'like' or 'as.'
Personification
Giving human traits or qualities to non-human objects or abstract ideas.
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates the natural sound it represents.
Alliteration
The repetition of the initial consonant sound at the beginning of words in a line(s) of poetry.
Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement used for emphasis or effect.
Symbol
An object, character, or event that represents a deeper meaning or idea beyond its literal sense.
