Cross fade
seamlessly transition between two audio cues by simultaneously fading out the current sound while fading in the next, creating a smooth overlap
Functional Sound design

Atmospheric sound design
the possibility of using underscoring that may include music but which may also be in the form of a soundscape.

where sound can be used to cover moments of transition (for example between scenes or to cover the placing of stage props)

sound that originates from within the fictional world of the [play] and is experienced by the characters
