Special effects

Visual or sound effects used to enhance a theatrical performance.

Cross fade

seamlessly transition between two audio cues by simultaneously fading out the current sound while fading in the next, creating a smooth overlap

Functional Sound design

for example practical sounds such as a gunshot to coincide with an action on stage

Atmospheric sound design

the possibility of using underscoring that may include music but which may also be in the form of a soundscape.

Incidental sound design

where sound can be used to cover moments of transition (for example between scenes or to cover the placing of stage props)

Diegetic sound

 sound that originates from within the fictional world of the [play] and is experienced by the characters

Non-diegetic sound

a sound that is not part of the fictional world of the [play] and is only heard by the audience.
