Biochemical Process
A chemical reaction (or a series of chemical reactions) that takes place in a living thing.
Respiration
The release of energy from food.
Aerobic Respiration
Respiration that needs oxygen.
Anaerobic Respiration
Respiration that does not need oxygen.
Glucose
A type of sugar carried by blood plasma from the small intestine to all the cells of the body, used in respiration.
Oxygen
A gas carried by haemoglobin in red blood cells from the lungs to all the cells of the body, used in aerobic respiration.
Mitochondria
Where aerobic respiration finishes (and releases most of the energy) in a cell.
Enzymes
Proteins that speed up reactions without being used up in the reaction.
Lactic Acid
A harmful waste product produced in humans during anaerobic respiration that causes muscles to cramp.
Yeast
A fungus used to make alcohol and in baking; it carries out anaerobic respiration to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide.
Products of Respiration
Energy, carbon dioxide, and water (vapour).
