Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
A statistical procedure used to test hypotheses for one or more factors concerning the variance among two or more group means.
One-Way ANOVA
A type of ANOVA where only one factor is tested with different participants observed at each level of that factor.
Degrees of Freedom (df)
The number of independent values or quantities that can be assigned to a statistical distribution.
Post Hoc Comparisons
Statistical procedures computed following a significant ANOVA to determine which pairs of group means significantly differ.
F Statistic
The test statistic for the ANOVA, computed as the mean square between groups divided by the mean square within groups.
Homogeneity of Variance
An assumption of ANOVA that states the variance within each population is equal.
Effect Size
A measure that estimates the strength of the relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable.
Eta-Squared (η²)
A measure of effect size used in ANOVA that indicates the proportion of variance in the dependent variable accounted for by the independent variable.
Null Hypothesis (H0)
The hypothesis that states there is no effect or no difference, in this context, that group means do not vary.
Alternative Hypothesis (H1)
The hypothesis that indicates there is an effect or a difference, suggesting that group means do vary.
Within-Subjects Design
A research design where the same participants are observed across all levels of the factor.
Between-Subjects Design
A research design in which different participants are observed at each level of a factor.
