In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was the onlyĀ presidential candidtateĀ to take the stand against slavery. His debate with Stephen Douglas won him fame as anĀ opponentĀ of slavery. The southern states threatened that they wouldĀ secedeĀ from the Union if Abraham Lincoln was elected president because he spoke out against slavery. After becoming president, Lincoln passed theĀ Emancipation ProclamationĀ of 1863 to make slavery illegal in theĀ Confederate states. The document said, āslaves of any stateā¦in rebellion⦠shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.ā Abraham Lincoln wasĀ assassinatedĀ in 1865.
