Important APUSH Compromises
Great Compromise
Context: The articles of confederation didn’t work and the US needed to find another way to split up power between one another.
Proposed plans to combat this:
New jersey plan, which advocated for equal votes amongst states, especially small states
Virginia plan advocated for votes based on population, especially in big states
Led to bicameral legislation
3/5ths compromise
Context: When population is considered, the South wanted to count slaves as a apart of their population in return for legislative representation. Whilst the North believed slaves should not be considered, based on the fact Southerners didn’t believe slaves were people.
Resulted in 3 out of every 5 slaves were counted towards the states population.
Compromise of 1820
Missouri had wanted to enter the union as slave state. But the North didn’t want the territory to join because it would get rid of the balance in the senate between free and slave states.
Results in Missouri joining as slave state and Maine joining in as free state to keep equal.
Also resulted in any decision that any future state under the Missouri southern border would become slave state
The compromise increased tensions between the slavery debate and was eventually overturned by Kansas Nebraska act
Compromise of 1850
Included a few main parts where:
all new states obtained were now under popular sovereignty except California
in return the south gets Fugitive Slave Act, that states that northerners are legally obligated to return runaway slaves
this compromise helped avoid the civil war but still increased tensions
Kansas and Nebraska Act
new states, Kansas and Nebraska attempted to join the union where they will be based under popular sovereignty.
Led to break up of Whigs and the rise of Republicans.
Resulted in the repealing of the Missouri compromise and Bleeding Kansas begins
Dredd Scott Supreme Court Case Decision
Dred Scott becomes a free slave in the North. He then gets lawyer in efforts to sue.
Results in:
Supreme court stating that slaves are not citizens, they are property. To which the constitution protects property.
This virtually takes all compromises and throws them out the window, as the supreme court overrules
Compromise of 1877
The big issue is over who won the election, but the government couldn’t figure out who won.
Causing the south threaten war again.
Republican Hayes get presidency.
In return, Democrats get union soldiers to withdraw from south.
Democrats takes over power back into the South, allowing them to introduce racist laws such as black codes, and the rise of the KKK
