Dimensional Consistency
A physical equation is dimensionally correct if all terms separated by addition, subtraction, or equality signs possess identical fundamental dimensions.
Velocity (v_f)
The final velocity in kinematics, represented as vf=vi+at.
Acceleration (a)
The rate of change of velocity, commonly represented in equations.
Kinematic Position Equation
An equation that relates position, initial velocity, acceleration, and time, given by x(t)=x0+v0t+21at2.
Displacement (x)
The change in position of an object, represented in the kinematic equations.
Speed limit comparison
The act of converting speed units (e.g., from km/h to mph) to determine if one is exceeding a posted speed limit.
Kinematic Equation for Velocity
An equation that relates final velocity, initial velocity, acceleration, and time, given by vf=v0+at.
Average Velocity
The total displacement divided by the total time taken, represented as vavg=Total timeTotal displacement.
Projectile Motion
The motion of an object that is subject only to the influence of gravity and initial velocity.
Tension in a Cable (T)
The force exerted by a cable in a pulling scenario, often analyzed in equilibrium problems.
Force of Friction (fk)
The force resisting the motion of a sliding object, often calculated as fk=coefficient×FN.
Newton's Second Law
States that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass, represented as F=ma.
Incline Angle (θ)
The angle at which an incline is set, affecting gravitational force components acting on objects on that incline.
Radial (Centripetal) Acceleration (ar)
The acceleration directed towards the center of a circular path, calculated as ar=rv2.
Mechanical Energy
The sum of potential energy and kinetic energy in a system.
Work-Energy Theorem
States that the work done on an object is equal to the change in its kinetic energy.
Elastic Potential Energy
The potential energy stored in an elastic object when it is deformed, calculated as Us=21kx2 for springs.
Conservative Force
A force that does work independent of the path taken, leading to potential energy changes dependent only on initial and final states.
Static Friction (fs)
The frictional force that prevents relative motion between two surfaces in contact.
Gravitational Potential Energy (Ug)
The energy stored in an object due to its height above a reference point, given by Ug=mgh.
Circular Motion
The motion of an object traveling along a circular path, requiring constant acceleration toward the center.
Comparison of Forces
Analyzing the net forces acting on a body to determine motion or equilibrium.
Dynamics of Two-Body Systems
The study of interactions and forces between two bodies, often involving tension and gravitational forces.
