What is sound?
Sound is a type of mechanical wave that travels through a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) by vibrating the particles of that medium.
Frequency
Determines the pitch of the sound; measured in Hertz (Hz).
Amplitude
Determines the loudness of the sound; higher amplitude means louder sound.
Wavelength
The distance between consecutive crests of a wave.
Speed of sound
The speed of sound varies depending on the medium; sound travels fastest in solids, slower in liquids, and slowest in gases.
Longitudinal waves
Sound travels as longitudinal waves, where the particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation.
What creates sound waves when speaking?
Vocal cords vibrate, causing air particles to move, creating sound waves.
Crest
The highest point of the wave, representing maximum displacement of particles from their rest position.
Trough
The lowest point of the wave, indicating the minimum displacement of particles from their rest position.
Rest position
The position of particles when no sound wave is traveling through the medium; the equilibrium position.
How does sound travel?
Sound waves are created by the vibration of a sound source, setting particles into motion, producing regions of compression and rarefaction.
What is sound pollution?
Excessive or harmful levels of sound that can lead to health issues and environmental problems.
Applications of sound
Includes music production, sonar for navigation, and medical imaging (ultrasound).
