Littoral zone
shallow near shore; light reaches bottom; rooted/floating plants flourish.(Lake fw)
Limnetic zone
well-lit open surface water; supports phytoplankton/zooplankton and many consumers; produces food and oxygen for much of the lake.(lake/fw)
profundal zone
deep, low/no light; too dark for photosynthesis; often low oxygen; inhabited by organisms adapted to cool, dark conditions.(lake/fw)
benthic zone
bottom sediments; important for decomposers and nutrient storage; organisms tolerate cooler temperatures and lower oxygen.(lake/fw)
Intertidal zone
area between high tide and low tide(ocean/sw)
Phonic zone
where phytoplankton produce a large amount of planets oxygen and take up large amounts of co2(ocean/sw)
Aphotic zone
Deeper layer of water that sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis doesn’t reach(ocean/sw)
Benthic zone
The ocean floor
Eutrophication
Nutrient runoff
Excess nutrients enter waters
Algae grow
create algal bloom
algae die
Sunlight blocked
Oxygen consumed
decomposition
Fish suffocate
