Theme
Topics that are discussed in a novel, or short story, for e.g. love, friendship, religion, apartheid
Motif
Different situations in the novel which gives you clues about what the/a theme could be, for e.g. how Trevor was born a crime, that the schools where divided/classes divided based on race etc. give us clues about the theme “apartheid”
Protagonist
The main character, if the main character is nice, then the antagonist is usually not nice to highlight the protagonists personal traits even more.

The opposite of the protagonist
Character/ Main character
The person who the story is about is the main character, but every person in a novel or any literary piece of work is a character
Plot
What the story is about
Dialogue
If there are two characters, or more, who are talking to each other, they have a dialogue
Monologue
One person talking to themselves, for e.g. “To be or not to be”
Conflict
A problem that needs to be resolved, the main issue that drives the story forward
Narrator
The person who is telling the story, the perspective of the story, for e.g. “I did something ….” (first person) “He then decided to …” (third person, all
Point of view
From whose perspective a story is told
Genre
Fantasy, thriller, drama, biography, autobiography, romantic, comedy, tragedy
Biography
When someone else describes someone’s life, for e.g. if you write about a historical figure
Autobiography
Someone who is writing about themselves and their own life
