DRAW the full digestion and absorption diagram from memory (7 tract parts in order, 4 secretion sources, 3 absorption arrows with where each goes), then flip to check
Tract = Mouth → Esophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Rectum → Anus. Secretions = salivary glands (mouth), gastric glands (stomach), liver and pancreas (small intestine). Absorption = lipids → lymphatic system → veins to heart; absorbed food except lipids → hepatic portal vein → liver → veins to heart; water → hepatic portal vein (from small AND large intestine). [Slide L8 p.29]
DRAW only the absorption half of the diagram from memory (three absorbed categories and every vessel or organ each passes through)
Lipids → lymphatic system → veins to heart. Food except lipids (sugars, amino acids) → hepatic portal vein → liver → veins to heart. Water → hepatic portal vein → liver.
Fill in the tract order. Mouth → ___ → Stomach → ___ → ___ → Rectum → ___
Esophagus; Small intestine; Large intestine; Anus
Name the source of secretions entering at the mouth, at the stomach, and at the small intestine (two sources for the last)
Mouth = salivary glands; Stomach = gastric glands; Small intestine = liver (bile, stored in gallbladder) and pancreas
Absorbed lipids first enter the ___, which then drains into the ___
Lymphatic system; veins to the heart (lipids bypass the liver at first)
Absorbed sugars and amino acids enter the ___ and travel first to the ___
Hepatic portal vein; liver (then on to the veins to the heart)
Which two regions of the tract absorb water, and which vessel does it enter?
Small intestine and large intestine; the hepatic portal vein (toward the liver)
Where is most food absorbed, and what structural feature makes that region good at it?
Small intestine (jejunum and ileum); villi and microvilli (brush border) give an enormous surface area, and transport across the epithelium can be active or passive [Slide L8 p.28]
