Cloud Computing
A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
Provides virtualized computing resources over the internet. Examples include Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Delivers hardware and software tools over the internet, often for application development. Examples include Google App Engine and Amazon EC2.
Software as a Service (SaaS)
Software distribution model where applications are hosted by a service provider and made available to customers over the internet.
Essential Characteristics of Cloud Computing
On-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service.
Service Level Agreement (SLA)
A contract between a service provider and a client that defines the expected level of service.
Resource Pooling
A cloud provider's model of serving multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, dynamically assigning and reallocating resources.
Scalability
The capability of a system to increase its capacity and accommodate growing amounts of work or users.
Market-Oriented Cloud Architecture
A framework that allows for flexibility and dynamic resource management in delivering cloud services based on user demand.
Cloud Technologies
Various models of cloud services which include SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, and multiple operational formats like private, public, and hybrid clouds.
Cloud Computing Definition (NIST)
A model for enabling on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources that can be rapidly provisioned and released.
Autonomic Resource Management
The ability of a system to manage its own resources dynamically to provide requested services.
Virtual Machines (VMs)
Emulated computers that run on physical hardware, allowing multiple operating systems to run on a single physical server.
Reliability in Cloud Computing
The assurance that a service will function consistently and that resources will be available when needed.
Cost Efficiency in Cloud Computing
The financial benefit of using cloud resources relative to on-premise infrastructure, including lower management costs.
