Huic Ser.
Servius Galba succeeded him [Nero], a senator of the oldest nobility, when he was living in 73rd year of life
having been elected as emperor by the soldiers of Spain and Gaul, soon accepted freely by the entire army.
For his private life had been distinguished by military and civil achievements. Often a consul, often a proconsul, frequently the leader in very serious wars.
The rule of this man was short and had a good beginning, unless he seemed more inclined to strictness.
Nevertheless, he was killed by the treachery of Otho in the seventh month of his reign. He was strangled in the Roman Forum, and buried in his own gardens, which were on the Aurelian road, not far from the city of Rome.
Otho, occiso Galba, invasit imperium, materno genere nobilior quam paterno, neutro tamen obscuro.
Otho, with Galba killed, seized the empire, more noble on his mother’s side than his father’s, neither, however, were unknown.
In privata vita mollis et Neroni familiaris, in imperio documentum sui non potuit ostendere.
In his private life, [he was] soft and close to Nero, in his reign he was not able to show evidence of himself.
Nam cum isdem temporibus, quibus Otho Galbam occiderat, etiam Vitellius factus esset a Germanicianis exercitibus imperator
For at the same time in which Otho had killed Galba, likewise Vitellius had been made emperor by the armies in Germany,
bello contra eum suscepto cum apud Betriacum in Italia levi proelio victus esset, ingentes tamen copias ad bellum haberet, sponte semet occidit.
with the war taken up against him, when he was defeated near Betriacum in Italy in an insignificant battle, although he had a huge amount of troops for the war, he killed himself by his own choice.
With the soldiers begging, that he would not despair about the outcome of the war so quickly, when he [Otho] said that he [Otho] was not so important, that a civil war would not be provoked on his account,
voluntaria morte obiit tricesimo et octavo aetatis anno, nonagesimo et quinto imperii die.
he died by voluntary death, in the 38th year of his life, on the 95th day of his reign.
