List the seven functions of the skin
Protection from injury and chemicals, defense against diseases, prevention of dehydration, maintenance of body temperature, excretion of waste, reception of stimuli, vitamin D synthesis
What is the epidermis made of?
Keratinocytes, melanocytes
What is the purpose of sebum gland
oil the hair, lubricate the skin, forms oil film that reduces water loss, also inhibits bacterial and fungal growth
Describe where the eccrine or merocrine sweat glands is found and it’s functions.
releases perspiration on the part of the skin that is open to the surface
Functions: cooling, excess water, protection from disease organisms
Describe where the apocrine is found and what it does
associated with hairs, produces thick, sticky, initially odorless secretions but certain bacteria begin to decompose these secretion causing it to stink
Describe where the ceruminous glands are found and what it does
Are found in the ear and secrete cerumen or ear wax
Describe the mammary glands
production of milk, related to apocrine sweat glands
What are the three things that determine skin color
hemoglobin, carotene, melanin
Describe a 1st degree burn
a sunburn, epidermis remain intact causing mild inflammation with redness and swelling. Can be treated with cold water
Describe a 2nd degree burn
maybe superficial or deep dermal burns. May cause blistering and as result is less capacity of regeneration and greater probability of scarring
Describe a 3rd degree burn
portions of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissues are destroyed. Skin may appear charred, bright red, or leathery. Besides loss of fluid, infection is of good concern and requires immediate attention
What is Basal cell carcinoma?
Most common types of skin cancer, cell in the basal layer of the epidermis are altered and malfunction. These epidermis cells migrate into the dermis and subcutaneous tissues eroding away tissues and forming ulcers.
What is squamous cell carcinoma?
begins in prickly cells of the stratum spinosum. Most frequently occur on parts of the body that are exposed to sun. If condition is untreated, metastasis may occur
What is malignant melanoma?
occurs in melanocytes and can spread rapidly and may cause death within a few months. Can arise from moles as well
