Vocabulary flashcards covering the core interface elements, viewing modes, tools, and graphics concepts in Adobe Illustrator.
Vector graphics
Artwork composed of lines and curves defined by mathematical objects called vectors, which can be resized to any scale without losing detail or clarity.
Raster images
Images, technically called bitmap images, that are made up of a rectangular grid of square pixels, where each pixel has a specific color.
Artboard
The area in an Illustrator document that contains artwork intended for output, functioning similarly to a page in Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Word.
Workspace
The onscreen arrangement of interface components, including the menus, Application bar, toolbar, and panels.
Application bar
The area across the top of the application that contains application controls, the workspace switcher, and search.
Document window
The workspace area that displays the active file or files currently being worked on.
Status bar
The bar located at the lower-left edge of the Document window that displays file information, zooming controls, and navigation options.
Selection tool
A primary tool used for moving, resizing, scaling, and rotating entire objects and artwork elements in Illustrator.
Properties panel
A panel that displays current document properties and preferences when nothing is selected, and appearance properties for whatever artwork is currently selected.
Selection Indicator
An indicator located at the top of the Properties panel that shows what type of content is currently selected, such as 'No Selection' or 'Group'.
Contextual Task Bar
An onscreen bar that displays near selected objects, providing rapid access to common tools, options, and actions relevant to the current selection.
Knife tool
A tool found in the Advanced toolbar used to cut vector shapes and artwork into separate pieces by dragging across them.
Tint
A lighter version of an existing color, produced by moving the single color slider to the left in the Color Mixer panel.
Control panel
A panel docked across the top of the workspace directly above the Document window that offers quick access to options, commands, and panels relevant to selected content.
Context menu
A menu that opens upon right-clicking that provides commands specifically relevant to the active tool, current selection, or panel.
Graphics processing unit (GPU)
A specialized processor found on video cards and display systems that rapidly executes commands for manipulating and displaying images to boost application performance.
Hand tool
A navigation tool used to pan across different areas of a document by clicking and dragging inside the Document window.
Rotate View tool
A viewing tool used to rotate the entire canvas and its artboards to make working on rotated elements easier without altering the artwork's actual orientation.
Preview mode
The default view mode in Illustrator where artwork is fully visible with all fills, strokes, and appearance attributes.
Outline mode
A view mode that displays only the outlines or vector paths of objects, making it easier to select hidden objects behind shapes and reducing redraw time for complex artwork.
Pixel Preview
A view mode that shows how vector artwork will look when rasterized into square pixels, revealing jagged edges as it would appear in a web browser.
