Vocabulary flashcards covering the functions, memory tricks, and anatomical distinctions of major thalamic nuclei and hypothalamic regions.
Medial Geniculate Nucleus (MGN)
A thalamic nucleus responsible for hearing (auditory pathway). Memory trick: MGN = Music.
Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN)
A thalamic nucleus responsible for vision (visual pathway). Memory trick: LGN = Looking.
Ventral Posterolateral Nucleus (VPL)
A thalamic nucleus that relays contralateral somatosensation from the body. Memory trick: VPL = Limbs.
Ventral Posteromedial Nucleus (VPM)
A thalamic nucleus that relays contralateral somatosensation from the face. Memory trick: VPM = Mouth.
Ventral Anterior and Ventral Lateral Nuclei (VA/VL)
Thalamic nuclei that function in motor control. Memory trick: VA/VL = Action.
Anterior Nucleus and Lateral Dorsal Nucleus
Thalamic nuclei associated with the limbic system. Memory trick: Anterior = Affect.
Pulvinar and Lateral Posterior Nuclei
Thalamic nuclei responsible for interpreting and learning written symbols. Memory trick: Pulvinar = Pages.
Dorsomedial Nucleus
A thalamic nucleus involved in emotions, moods, feelings, and personality. Memory trick: Dorsomedial = Mood.
Anterior and Medial Areas of Hypothalamus
Hypothalamic regions that activate the parasympathetic pathway. Memory trick: Rest and digest.
Posterior and Lateral Areas of Hypothalamus
Hypothalamic regions that activate the sympathetic pathway. Memory trick: Fight or flight.
Anterior Hypothalamus
Hypothalamic area that serves as the heat dissipation center and regulates the sleep cycle. Memory trick: A = Air conditioning.
Posterior Hypothalamus
Hypothalamic area that acts as the heat conservation center. Memory trick: P = Preserves heat.
Ventromedial Nucleus
Hypothalamic nucleus that acts as the satiety center, mediating the feeling of being full. Memory trick: Very full.
Lateral Hypothalamic Area
Hypothalamic area that functions as the feeding center to stimulate hunger. Memory trick: Let's eat!
Posterior Hypothalamus and Mammillary Bodies
Hypothalamic structures responsible for governing the wake cycle. Memory trick: Wake up!
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN)
Hypothalamic nucleus that controls circadian rhythms (24-hour biological clock). Memory trick: SCN = Sleep Clock Nucleus.
Supraoptic and Paraventricular Nuclei
Hypothalamic nuclei responsible for maintaining water balance and synthesizing oxytocin and ADH. Memory trick: OXY + ADH.
Median Eminence
Hypothalamic region responsible for hormone regulation of pituitary function. Memory trick: Pituitary hormone gateway.
Preoptic Nucleus
Hypothalamic nucleus contributing GnRH signaling to regulate LH and FSH release from the anterior pituitary. Memory trick: Reproduction.
Hypothalamic GnRH vs. LH/FSH Release
The preoptic region contributes GnRH signaling to stimulate the anterior pituitary to release LH and FSH; the hypothalamus itself does not directly release LH or FSH.
