Epithelial tissue

A type of tissue that forms large sheets of cells covering body surfaces and lining organs.

Simple epithelium

A single layer of cells that can be squamous, cuboidal, or columnar.

Stratified epithelium

Multiple layers of cells, named based on the shape of the most superficial layer.

Pseudostratified epithelium

A type of epithelium appearing stratified but consists of a single layer of irregularly shaped cells.

Goblet cell

A mucous-secreting unicellular gland found among epithelial cells.

Basal lamina

A non-cellular layer that attaches epithelium to underlying connective tissue.

Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium

Epithelial tissue that includes dead cells filled with keratin, providing protection in high-trauma areas.

Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium

Epithelial tissue that remains moist and is found in areas such as the esophagus and vagina.

Endocrine gland

A type of gland that secretes hormones directly into the blood.

Exocrine gland

A gland that secretes chemicals through ducts to the external environment.
