The Fundamental Principles of the Sport of Bowling

Should always be a part of every  bowler’s basic foundation

2
New cards

How solid the bowler’s essential skills are.

How fast one will advance in the sport will be determined on

3
New cards

Synchronization of the movements of the arm and feet

In the traditional 4-step approach, this is very vital.

4
New cards

Maintain the body in a comfortable position

It is also equally important before performing the full delivery

5
New cards

Walk pattern / Tempo enhancement

It is for this significant reason that it  became necessary to include this in the fundamental bowling execution to make the movement more efficient.

6
New cards

The First / Preparatory Step

The 5-step approach helps the bowler to gain the  needed momentum while maintaining a relaxed state, wherein the first step, for this  purpose, simply initiates the body into the forward movement.

7
New cards

The Second Step

This is still the key step. It initiates the ball placement.

8
New cards

The Second Step

It is characterized as a forward-downward/ hinge-down movement (depending on the ball height  at the stance) of the bowling arm.

9
New cards

The Second Step

It is necessary to use both hands to place/ push your ball  inward towards your sliding foot (non-bowling side foot).

10
New cards

The Second Step

TRY TO FEEL THE BOWLING BALL ON THE BOWLING HAND WITH THE WEIGHT  COMFORTABLY SITTING IN YOUR PALM.

11
New cards

The Second Step

Focus on your visual target. There should be no tension keeping the bowling arm  relaxed, isolating the finger pressure on the ball. There should also be no tension on the  back keeping your weight in the center allowing the body to relax with no unnecessary  weight pull from any side.

12
New cards

The Third Step

Let your bowling arm swing free at the shoulder joint sideways  (aligned with your frontal plane). Keep the elbow close to the body and your head position  stable. Let your balance arm move forward/ away from your body and keep it in front  facilitating a position of balance.

13
New cards

The Third Step

KEEP YOUR LEAD SHOULDER (NON-BALL SIDE) AND HIPS MOVING FORWARD AS A UNIT,  KEEPING YOUR ALIGNMENT TOWARDS YOUR TARGET LINE.

14
New cards

The Fourth Step

Allow your armswing to reach its maximum height. The swing  naturally follows the frontal plane/ sideways motion (armswing abduction) promoting a controlled but efficient armswing.

15
New cards

The Fourth Step

KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON YOUR INTENDED TARGET LINE (FRONT TO BACK).

16
New cards

The Fifth Step (Slide)

Let your bowling ball follow the downward swing towards  your sliding foot (armswing adduction). The trailing leg, as an incidental body movement moves towards the back, as the knees are flexed towards the slide, promoting leverage and  balance for a more stable finish.

17
New cards

The Fifth Step (Slide)

THE ELBOW MUST BE FLEXED AS THE SHOULDER DROPS AND ANY ACCELERATION ON THE  SWING SHOULD ONLY START FROM THE LOWEST POINT OF THE FORWARD SWING (PROZONE).

18
New cards

The Follow Through

It must be fluid (which means it is gradual) and with full elbow extension.

19
New cards

The Follow Through

FOLLOW THROUGH TOWARDS THE PINS (RATHER THAN THE CEILING).

20
New cards

1. Wrist relatively straight in relation to the forearm.

2. Thumb comes out of the ball first; followed by the bent fingers with pressure

applied consistently.

3. Ball rolls off the side of the palm with the thumb positioned towards 11 o'clock

for right-handed bowlers and 1 o'clock for left-handed bowlers.
