Vocabulary flashcards covering the classification of matter, including elements, compounds, mixtures, and chemical symbol rules based on the lecture notes.
Pure Substance
A primary category of matter consisting of elements and compounds.
Element
A substance that contains only one type of atom and cannot be broken down physically, chemically, or at all (e.g., helium, oxygen).
Compound
A substance consisting of two or more types of different atoms chemically combined and bonded, which can only be broken down through a chemical reaction (e.g., H2O).
Mixture
A combination of two or more pure substances combined physically together that do not have a set ratio or combination (e.g., trail mix, salt water).
Homogenous mixture
A mixture that looks to be one thing, also called a solution (e.g., salt water).
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture that looks to be in different separate parts (e.g., trail mix).
Atom Symbols
One- or two-letter symbols used to name atoms, written as a single capital letter (e.g., C for carbon) or a capital letter followed by a lowercase letter (e.g., Ca for calcium).
