Kimball Kinnison
The central protagonist and class captain of the Tellurian Candidates for the Lens. He is portrayed as an exceptional leader who progresses from a cadet to a highly celebrated "unattached Lensman”
Sergeant VanBuskirk
A Valerian described as a "mountain of a man" (6'5" tall and wide) from a high-gravity planet. Although he failed to pass math and could not become a Lensman due to his mental limitations. Kinnison’s loyal sidekick.
Admiral Haynes
The leader of the Galactic Patrol who mentors Kinnison. He is portrayed as a fatherly figure who suggests Kinnison should eventually consider marriage and a future beyond the service.
Clarrissa MacDougall
A nurse with unusual ship experience for a woman of that era. She is introduced as a potential romantic match for Kinnison and is significant because she becomes the first Lenswoman.
Tregonsee
A Lensman encountered on the planet Trenco. He is a non-human character who "cannot see" in the traditional sense but has many fingers and a powerful mind. Helps Kinnison navigate Trenco’s hostile environment.
Thorndyke
Thorndyke is a skilled technician who aids in the maintenance and repair of their experimental ships. Part of Kinnison’s crew.
Worsel
A dragon-like Velantian who becomes a critical ally. While he possesses immense mental and telepathic abilities. He suffers from a “dying complex” and serves as a site of tension between “mind” and “will.”
The Arisians
An ancient dragon-like race that possessed vast wisdom regarding the “essence of life.” Creators of the Lens and serve as mentors for the Galactic Patrol but do not interfere with conflict with the pirates.
Von Hohendorff
An "ogre commandant" who oversees the training of candidates. Though initially seen as harsh, later understood to be necessary part of transition from “boy to man".
Helmuth (Boskone)
The primary antagonist and "speaker" of the Boskone pirates. A cold, blue-skinned leader, he rules through a repressive military dictatorship and believes the “ends justifies the means”
The Delgonians
An enemy race of the Velantians that uses hypnotism to prey on their victims' worst fears. They are described as the first major hurdle Kinnison and Worsel must overcome together.
Wolmark
A subordinate of Helmuth who is left in charge of the pirate base during Helmuth's failed attempt to confront the Arisians.

Eugenics
A popular/common topic at the time Galactic Patrol was written. The idea that only “superior” beings should reproduces and “inferior” beings should die off.
Graduation and Commission
The story begins with Kinnison as the class captain of the Tellurian Candidates for the Lens. He successfully becomes a Lensman—a selective role that grants him a "Lens," a device from the Arisians that is beyond nature and allows for telepathic communication.
The Britannia Mission
Promoted instantly, Kinnison is given command of the experimental ship Britannia to hunt Boskone pirates. During a high-stakes battle, the crew is forced to abandon and destroy the Britannia to trick the pirates and keep their technology out of enemy hands.
The Battle on Delgon
Kinnison encounters Worsel, a dragon-like Velantian who is being preyed upon by the Delgonians. Kinnison helps Worsel "brace" his mind against the Delgonians' hypnotism, marking a significant moment where Kinnison’s willpower aids a mentally powerful but will-less ally.
Surviving Trenco
Kinnison and his crew navigate the hostile environment of the planet Trenco, which is the sole source of the drug Thionite. He survives the planet's extreme winds and lightning by relying on his Lens rather than his eyes, unlike a previous Lensman who died there.
Infiltrating the Pirate Base
Using the ship Prometheus as bait, Kinnison tracks the pirates back to a secret base on Aldebaran II. He infiltrates the base but is nearly killed by a machine, leaving him with a broken arm and severe injuries.
Recovery and Meeting Clarissa
While recovering at the Patrol hospital, Kinnison meets nurse Clarissa MacDougall. Although he is initially a difficult patient, this meeting establishes their relationship, and Clarissa is noted for having ship experience, which was unusual for a woman in this setting.
Arisian Training
Recognizing his limitations, Kinnison returns to the Arisians for advanced training. He "levels up," gaining a "new eyesight" that allows him to see in the dark and the power to read and control minds telepathically.
Rescuing the Hostages
Kinnison uses his new powers to save a group of nurses, including Clarissa, who had been taken hostage by pirates.
Defeating Helmuth
For the final assault, Kinnison prototypes a mechanical armor suit. He infiltrates the main pirate base and confronts the antagonist Helmuth. In the climax, Kinnison reflects Helmuth's own bullets back at him using the armor suit, killing the pirate leader and effectively ending the Boskone threat for this novel.

The Lensmen come from many different races and planets, yet they are all united in service. Differences are ok as long as it is subsumed withing framework of dominant culture — you just dont have to worrt about learning language thanks to the Lens.
