Print Production
The process of turning digital artwork into a physical print through a commercial printer.
Prepress
Everything done before ink hits paper; includes document setup, image optimization, font handling, and export preparation.
Press
The actual printing stage where color is formed and printed onto paper.
Postpress
Finishing processes after printing, which includes trimming, folding, binding, and laminating.
Bleed
Extra artwork that extends beyond the trim edge to avoid white slivers after cutting.
Trim Size
The final intended size of a printed piece after the paper has been cut.
Safe Area
The region inside the trim where important design elements like text and logos should be kept safe from being trimmed.
PPI
Pixels per inch; measures image resolution in relation to its print size.
DPI
Dots per inch; a printing term that measures how densely dots of ink are placed on the paper.
Halftones
A technique that uses patterns of dots to simulate continuous tones in printed materials.
Spot Colors
Premixed inks used in printing to achieve colors that can't be easily reproduced with CMYK.
Rich Black
A color made by combining black (K) with some percentages of cyan, magenta, and yellow to achieve a deeper black.
Overprint
When an ink layer is printed over another ink layer without removing the underlying ink.
Transparency
The property of an element in design where layers are blended; it can require flattening for printing.
Digital Proof
A PDF proof used for verifying content and layout before final printing.
Hard Proof
A physical printed proof used to evaluate color and expected output quality.
Moiré
An interference pattern that appears when two repeating patterns overlap in print.
ICC Profile
A data file that characterizes a color input or output device to ensure consistent color reproduction.
Soft Proofing
Simulating how colors will appear in print on a screen using specific profiles.
Post-Press Operations
Tasks performed after printing such as cutting, folding, binding, and laminating.
Font Handling
The process of ensuring that text appears correctly in print, typically achieved through embedding or outlining fonts.
Pixelation
The appearance of images becoming blocky or blurry due to low resolution when printed.
Knockout
A printing technique where the underlying ink is removed to allow for top ink to show through.
Dot Gain
The phenomenon where halftone dots spread during printing, often leading to darker prints.
Preflight Check
The process of checking a file against print requirements before it goes to press.
Print-Ready PDF
A finalized PDF that includes all necessary elements for printing, such as embedded fonts and bleed.
Vector Artwork
Graphics defined by mathematical equations that scale without losing quality.
Compression Artifacts
Distortions in an image that occur due to lossy compression methods.
Bit Depth
The number of bits used to represent each pixel, affecting the range of colors available in an image.
Creep
The displacement of inner pages in a folded booklet, which can affect the layout near the spine.
Rendering Intent
A method used during color conversion that determines how colors are adapted when moved between profiles.
Packaging a Job
Collecting all necessary files and resources before delivery to the printer.
File Resolution
The amount of detail an image holds, typically determined by the number of pixels per inch.
Viewing Conditions
The environment under which prints are evaluated, which can influence perception of color.
Color Gamut
The range of colors that can be reproduced by a specific device, such as a monitor or printer.
Trim Marks
Guides printed on a document indicating where the paper should be cut.
Proof Approval
The process in which a proof is reviewed and confirmed to meet expectations before final printing.
Typography
The art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and visually appealing.
Minimum Line Weight
The smallest width for lines that can be printed clearly, which varies based on printing method.
Pantone Color Matching System
A standardized color reproduction system widely used in various industries for color specification.
Format Conversion
Changing the file format of an image or document to meet certain requirements for printing.
Color Calibration
The process of adjusting the output of a device to ensure its colors are represented accurately.
Final Output Size
The physical dimensions that a printed piece is intended to occupy, which influences design choices.
Color Management
The practice of controlling and maintaining consistent color across different devices.
Design Intent
The underlying purpose or concept behind a design, guiding choices in layout, color, and typography.
Export Settings
Parameters set during the file export process that dictate how the final file will be rendered.
