Pun
a play on different possible meanings of a word or words that sound alike but have different meanings (usually for humorous effect)
Alliteration
repetition of initial sounds of words
Assonance
repetition of vowel sounds
Consonance
repetition of consonant sounds
Sibilance
repetition of the "s," "sh," or "z" sound
Onomatopoeia
a word whose sound suggests its meaning
Off/Slant/Near Rhyme
the ending sound(s) are closely related but not identical
Sight/Eye Rhyme
two words look alike but don't sound alike
Ex: daughter, laughter
Internal Rhyme
rhyme that occurs WITHIN a line, rather than at the end of two or more lines
Rhyme Scheme
the pattern of end rhyme
Stanza
a group of lines in a poem, usually identified by the number of lines
Couplet
a pair of (usually) rhymed lines

a four line stanza
