Hypertonic
A solution with a higher concentration of solutes compared to another solution, causing water to flow out of the cell and potentially causing the cell to shrivel or crenate.
Isotonic
A solution with the same concentration of solutes as another solution, resulting in no net movement of water in or out of the cell.
Hypotonic
A solution with a lower concentration of solutes compared to another solution, causing water to flow into the cell and potentially causing the cell to swell and burst.
Effect of Hypertonic Solution on the Cell
Water flows out of the cell through osmosis, leading to cell shrinkage or crenation.
Effect of Isotonic Solution on the Cell
Cells remain stable with no net movement of water in or out of the cell.
Effect of Hypotonic Solution on the Cell
Water flows into the cell, potentially causing cell swelling and bursting.
Uses of Hypertonic Solution
Used to reduce edema (swelling) and treat hyponatremia in some cases.
Uses of Isotonic Solution
Used to maintain blood volume, as a vehicle for medication delivery, and for hydration.
Uses of Hypotonic Solution
Used for rehydration and sometimes to treat cellular dehydration or elevated sodium levels.
Considerations for Hypertonic Solution
Excessive use can cause cellular dehydration and over-correction in hyponatremia can lead to osmotic demyelination syndrome.
Considerations for Isotonic Solution
Generally safe for intravenous administration, but monitor for potential overhydration in susceptible patients.
Considerations for Hypotonic Solution
Excessive use can cause cellular lysis and avoid rapid administration in cases of hypernatremia to prevent cerebral edema.
Examples of Hypertonic Solutions
3% and 5% saline, 5% dextrose in 0.9% saline, 5% dextrose in 0.45% saline, 5% dextrose in lactated Ringer's, 10% dextrose in water.
Examples of Isotonic Solutions
0.9% sodium chloride, lactated Ringer's and Hartman's, 5% dextrose in 0.225% saline, 5% dextrose in water.
Examples of Hypotonic Solutions
0.45% saline, 0.225% saline, 0.33% saline, 5% dextrose in water.
