What are monomers?
Monomers are smaller units from which larger molecules are made
What are polymers?
Polymers are large molecules made from many repeating monomers joined together
How are polymers formed?
In condensation reactions.
What happens in a condensation reaction?
• Two molecules are joined together.
• A chemical bond is formed.
• A water molecule is released. (Water molecule is formed)
How are polymers broken apart?
In hydrolysis reactions.
What happens in hydrolysis reactions?
• Two molecules are separated.
• The chemical bond is broken.
• A water molecule is used.
What is an isomer?
It has the same molecular formula, but a different structure.
For example, glucose exists as two isomers: alpha glucose and beta glucose.
