Diffraction
When a wave (like light or sound) bends or spreads out after hitting an obstacle or going through a small opening, allowing waves to bend around corners or edges rather than traveling in straight lines.
Double slit diffraction
A phenomenon that occurs when waves pass through two narrow, closely spaced slits, spreading out from each slit and overlapping to create an interference pattern of bright and dark spots.
Interference pattern
A pattern of alternating bright and dark spots or stripes created when overlapping waves reinforce each other at crests and troughs.
Wave-particle duality
The quantum principle stating that matter (such as electrons) and light exhibit both wave-like and particle-like properties depending on how they are measured and observed.
Measurement problem
The unresolved quantum phenomenon where the act of observing or measuring a quantum system causes it to collapse from a wave of potential states into a single, definite particle outcome.
Direct relationship
A relationship where values move in the same direction; in an equation, if the numerator goes up or down, the value being solved for goes up or down accordingly.
Inverse relationship
A relationship where values move in opposite directions; in an equation, if the denominator goes up, the value being solved for goes down, and vice versa.
Diffraction equation
The formula λ=Dax relating wavelength (λ), slit spacing (a), band spacing (x), and the distance to the screen (D).
Band spacing (x)
The distance between adjacent fringes or bright bands on the screen, calculated by dividing the total measured pattern width by the number of spaces between bands.
Slit spacing (a)
The distance between the two slits in a diffraction setup, or the thickness of a wire or hair splitting the beam.
Screen distance (D)
The distance from the double slits or wire obstacle to the screen where the interference pattern is projected.
