Nervous Tissue
found in brain and spinal cord and branching nerves
neurons
(nerve cells) make up nervous tissue
dendrites
branching fibers connecting to axons
axons
allows nerve impulses to jump to the next neuron
muscular tissue
long and fibrous, made for contractions
cardiac mt
found in the heart
one nucleus
striated
involuntary contraction
branching
intercalated disc
connects cardiac mt cells
skeletal mt
striated
multinucleated
voluntary contraction
partial repairs
smooth mt
slender and tapered
not striated
found in hollow organs and tracts
can divide/regenerate after injury
myofibrils
tiny fibers that make up skeletal and cardiac mt
Epithelial tissue
consists of sheets of cells that form glands and lines all body surfaces, cavities, and ducts
basement membrane
tin sheet of protein fibers acting as a platform for the cells.
simple squamous
one layer, allows substances to diffuse across them easily, can absorb and secrete
cuboidal tissue
found in glands, ducts, and tubes, allow limited portection, secretion, and absoprtion,
columnar cells
can be ciliated, protect, secrete, and absorb
cilia
sweep debris along tracts (fallopian tubes and respiratory tracts)
pseudostratified
means that it seems stratified but all cells touch the basement
goblet cells
produce musuc to trap dirt and bacteria to be moved allong by cilia
transitional epithelia
stratified with cells that change shape depending on whether they need to stretch (found in urinary tract and vagina)
glands
produce secretions, made of mostly cuboidal cells
exocrine glands
release secretions on teh surface
endocrine glands
release secretions/hormones into the blood stream
CT
connects organs, tissues, cartilage, and bones
supports, binds, and separates tissues and organs
ground substance
colorless material, gel-like, surrounds cells and fibers of CT and provides structural support (aka a matrix)
facilitates diffusion of o2, electrolytes, nutrients ebtween cells and blood vessels
adipose tissue
contains adipocytes (fat cells), CT becomes adipose when it is overrun by fat cells
found under the skin, around organs
areolar tissue
contains diverse cell and tissue types
found beneath skin, cushioning and protecting organsf
fibroblasts
create fibers
macrophased
WBC that eat pathogens that enter tissue
lymphocytes
helps w immune response
mast cells
help with allergic responses and stimulate bodily reaction during injury or infection
collagen fibers
thick and strong
elastic fibers
wavy and stretchy
reticular fibers
provide support, narrow and branching
Cartilage
made up on chondrocytes
Lacunae
little grooves that house chondrocytes
Hyaline cartilage
closely packed collagen, caps ends of bones to prevent frictional damage
elastic cartilage
has elastic fibers, found in epiglottis, external flap of ear
fibrocartilage
densw, with many interwoven collagen, resists compression and shock (found in between vertebrae and joints)
Dense regular CT
parallel collage fibers, makes up ligaments and tendoms for strength
Dense irregular CT
interwoven collagen with some elastic, found covering organs, bones, cartilage, and supports epithelial layers of skin
Reticular tissue
supports the liver and lymphatic cells, made up of reticular fibers
Elastic tissue
found in artery walls, some veins, air cells of lungs, and ligaments,
blood
type of fluid ct, made up of RBC, WBC, and platelets
plasma
name of matrix in blood
bone tissue
strong ground substance (calcified), made of osteocytes found in lacunae, situated in circles called osteons, recieve nutrients from capilaries thru canaliculi
