Ocular Lens (Eyepiece)
The primary lens you look through at the top of the microscope; typically provides a built-in 10x magnification.

Diopter Adjustment
A focus adjustment ring located on one of the eyepieces that compensates for focus differences between your individual eyes in a binocular setup.

Nosepiece (Revolving Nosepiece)
A rotating circular turret that holds multiple objective lenses and allows easy switching between magnification powers.

Scanning Lens (4x and red)
Lowest power objective lens; provides a broad view to quickly locate specimens.
Low-Power Lens (10x and yellow)
Medium power objective lens; useful for general examination and initial focusing.
High-Power Lens (40x–45x and Blue)
High detail magnification objective lens for fine structural observation.
Oil Immersion Lens (100x and White)
Highest power objective lens; requires immersion oil between lens and slide to minimize light refraction.

Stage Clips
Spring-loaded metal brackets on the stage that hold the glass slide securely in position.

Aperture
The opening in the center of the stage through which light travels from below to illuminate the specimen.

Diaphragm (Iris Diaphragm)
An adjustable iris beneath the stage that regulates the amount, angle, and contrast of light reaching the specimen.
Condenser
A sub-stage lens assembly that gathers and concentrates light from the illuminator into a focused beam on the specimen slide.

Illuminator (Light Source)
The built-in light source located in the base that projects light upward through the condenser, specimen, and objective lenses.

Head
The upper structural enclosure connecting the eyepieces/ocular lenses to the revolving nosepiece assembly.
Arm (Carrying Handle)
The sturdy vertical structural frame connecting the head and stage to the base; serves as a primary hand-grip for transport.
Mechanical Stage
The flat, rigid platform holding the slide, equipped with control mechanisms for smooth, precise movement along X and Y axes.
Coarse Adjustment Knob
The larger outer focus knob that moves the stage up and down rapidly in large increments; used strictly on scanning (4x) and low-power (10x) objectives.

Fine Adjustment Knob
The smaller inner focus knob that moves the stage in microscopic increments; used for fine-tuning crisp focus and mandatory under high-power (40x/100x) objectives.

Stage Controls
Coaxial control knobs located below the stage level that translate the mechanical stage precisely left/right and forward/backward.

Base
The broad heavy bottom support of the microscope housing the light source, power switch, and electronics; must be supported by a hand during transport.
Brightness Adjustment (Rheostat)
A rotary dial or slider that varies electrical voltage to control light bulb intensity output.
Light Switch
The master toggle switch that supplies power to the built-in illuminator.
Total Magnification Formula
Calculated by multiplying ocular lens power by objective lens power: Total Magnification=Ocular Lens Power (10×)×Objective Lens Power.
Field of View (FOV)
The circular image area visible when looking through the eyepieces. As magnification increases, the field of view size decreases significantly.
Depth of Field
The vertical plane/thickness of the specimen that remains sharply in focus at any given moment. Decreases as magnification increases.
Working Distance
The distance between the bottom of the objective lens and the top of the glass slide coverslip. Decreases sharply as objective power increases.
Parfocal
An optical design feature ensuring that when a specimen is focused under one objective, it remains nearly focused when switching to higher powers.
Wet Mount Preparation
A preparation protocol: place a drop of liquid/specimen in the middle of a clean slide, hold a coverslip at a 45-degree angle to the edge of the liquid drop, and slowly lower the coverslip to prevent trapping air bubbles over the sample.
Lens Paper
Specialized paper used strictly to clean optical glass components (never paper towels or tissues).
Cell Theory Principles
The core principles stating that all living organisms are composed of one or more cells, the cell is the structural and functional unit of life, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells through cell division.
Focusing Technique & Sequence
Always start focusing on the lowest power objective (4x/10x) with the stage fully lowered. Bring the image into focus using the Coarse Adjustment Knob (big one), and switch to high power and use only the Fine Adjustment Knob (little one) to refine focus, preventing lens/slide damage
