Organelle
Specialized structures within a cell that perform distinct processes.
Nucleus
The organelle that contains most of the cell's DNA and is the site of transcription.
Mitochondrion
An organelle responsible for energy production through cellular respiration.
Chloroplast
An organelle found in plants that conducts photosynthesis.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
An organelle involved in the translation of proteins and lipid synthesis.
Golgi Apparatus
An organelle that modifies, sorts, and transports proteins.
Cytoskeleton
A network of fibers crucial for cell shape, support, and movement.
Meiosis
A type of cell division that reduces chromosome number by half to form haploid cells.
Chitin
A component of the cell walls of fungi, providing structure and rigidity.
Cellulose
A polysaccharide that forms the structural component of the primary cell wall in green plants.
Haploid
A cell containing one set of chromosomes (N).
Diploid

Vacuole
An organelle that is involved in storage and maintaining cell structure.
Lysosome
An organelle that contains digestive enzymes for breaking down waste materials.
Peroxisome
A small organelle that contains enzymes for oxidative reactions.
Gene expression
The process by which information from a gene is used to synthesize a functional gene product.
Cilia
Short, hair-like structures that help in cell movement and sensing the environment.
Fungi
A kingdom of eukaryotic organisms that includes yeasts, molds, and mushrooms; characterized by heterotrophic nutrition and chitin cell walls.
Fungi Phylogeny
The evolutionary history and relationships among different groups of fungi, often based on molecular and morphological data.
Chytridiomycota
A phylum of fungi, mostly aquatic, known for producing flagellated zoospores.
Zygomycota
A phylum of fungi characterized by the formation of a zygospore during sexual reproduction (e.g., bread molds).
Glomeromycota
A phylum of fungi that form arbuscular mycorrhizae, a symbiotic relationship with plant roots.
Ascomycota
A phylum of fungi commonly known as sac fungi, characterized by the production of ascospores in a sac-like structure called an ascus.
Basidiomycota
A phylum of fungi commonly known as club fungi, characterized by the production of basidiospores on a club-shaped structure called a basidium (e.g., mushrooms).
Protozoa
A diverse group of single-celled eukaryotic organisms that are heterotrophic and motile, often considered animal-like protists.
Giardia lamblia
A species of flagellated protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis, an intestinal infection in humans and other animals.
Slime molds
Eukaryotic organisms that can live freely as single cells but can aggregate to form a multicellular reproductive structure, resembling fungi.
