Regression
A statistical method used to predict an outcome from one or more variables.
Predictor variable (X)
The variable used to predict an outcome.
Criterion variable (Y)
The outcome variable being predicted.
Simple regression
Regression that uses one predictor variable to predict an outcome.
Multiple regression
Regression that uses two or more predictor variables to predict an outcome.
Regression equation: Y = a + bX
An equation used to predict Y using the intercept (a), slope (b), and predictor (X).
Predicted value (Ŷ)
The outcome value estimated by a regression equation.
Slope (b)
The predicted change in Y for every one-unit increase in X.
Y-intercept (a)
The predicted value of Y when X equals zero.
