Overview of ABC model of flower development

A model that describes process by which plant produces a specific pattern of gene expression in meristem that leads to flower/secks organ production

3
New cards

Prerequisites for ABC model of flower development

  1. Plant has passed from seksual immaturity to a seksually mature state

  2. Apical meristem function transforms from a vegetative meristem to a floral meristem or inflorescence

  3. Flower’s individual organs have grown (ABC model!)

What happens during ABC model of flower development?

  • Stimulus starts it up (e.g.)

  • Mitotic cell division in apical meristem activated; floral meristem development started.

  • Identity of the organs of floral meristem determined via at least 3 genes.

    • A →ID of verticels on perianth.

    • B → Differentiation of petals from sepals on 2nd verticel, and of stamen from carpel on 3rd verticel.

    • C →ID of reproductive verticels.
