Pure Substance
A form of matter that has a fixed and uniform composition and uniform properties throughout, consisting of only one type of particle and unable to be separated into other substances by physical methods.
Element
A pure substance made of only one kind of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are physically combined but not chemically bonded.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture whose components are not uniformly distributed and in which different parts can be seen or distinguished.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture that has a uniform composition throughout.
Gold (Au)
An example of an element.
Oxygen (O2)
An example of an element.
Iron (Fe)
An example of an element.
