What is syntax?
The rules that govern how words and phrases are arranged to form sentences such as word order and subject-verb agreement
What does qualify mean?
To modify (change while keeping the original), or add a certain quality to, something (words, in our case)
What is a noun?
Names a person, place, or thing
What is a concrete noun?
any person, place, or thing that you can experience with your five senses
What is an abstract noun?
Intangible things that exist as ideas or concepts
What is a pronoun?
Replaces a noun (antecedent) Ex: I, me, you, he, him
What is an adjective?
Qualifies a noun
Answer questions like which one, what kind, or how many.
What is a verb?
Expresses an action or state of being
Expresses what the person, animal, place, thing, or concept does. In english, verbs follow the noun.
What is an infinitive verb?
A verb that has “to“ as part of the verb. Infinitives usually function as nouns, adverbs, or adjectives
What is an adverb?
Qualifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb by telling how, when, where, why, under what conditions, or to what extent.
An adverb is often formed by adding -ly to an adjective.
May add an -ily or an extra “l”, as in -lly
What are the 3 functions of an adverb?
An adverb can modify a verb.
An adverb can modify an adjective
An adverb can modify another adverb.
What is a coordinating conjunction?
Joins words or groups together
F-A-N-B-O-Y-S
For, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, SO
What is a subordinating conjunction?
Links a dependent clause to an independent clause
Since, After, When, Before, If, Although, Because, As, While, Until, Whether
What is a correlative conjunction?
Illustrates how two words or phrases within a sentence relate to each other. Always comes in pairs
Ex:
either/or, neither/nor, such/that, whether/or, not only/but also, both/and, as many/as, no sooner/than, rather/than
What is an interjection?
Interjects, expression a sudden emotion.
Ex:
Oh! Ouch! Great! Aha! No! Wow! My goodness!
What is a preposition?
Shows relationships between nouns and pronouns and other words in a sentence.
Ex:
Above, below, over, under, between, from, of
