What's the difference between descriptive statistics and inferential statistics?
Descriptive statistics summarize and organize data through numerical calculations, graphs, and tables, while inferential statistics use sample data to make predictions or conclusions about a larger population.
Jordan surveys the basketball team and finds out 12 of 21 players prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla. How can you tell he is using descriptive statistics?
He is using descriptive statistics because he is not drawing any conclusions.
Jordan then predicts that all Butler students will prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla. Why is this inferential?
This is inferential due to the fact that he drew a conclusion that Butler students prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla based on a sample of players, extending beyond the initial group.
What’s the difference between qualitative and quantitative data?
Qualitative is non-numeric and sorts things into different categories. Quantitative is numerically valued.
Quantitative data can be discrete or continuous. The number of siblings you have is discrete (not continuous). Why?
The number of siblings you have cannot be a decimal which means the data has clear spaces between its values.
True or false: the shape of a frequency graph will be the same as the shape of a relative frequency graph.
True
To find relative frequency, use:
Count/Total
