Osteoporosis
A chronic, progressive disease associated with low bone mass, impaired bone quality, decreased bone strength, and increased risk of fractures.
Primary Osteoporosis
The most common type of osteoporosis, primarily occurring in females after menopause and males later in life.
Secondary Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis associated with medications and conditions such as corticosteroids, immobilization, and certain diseases.
DEXA scan
A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan used to diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density.
T-score
A standard score that compares a patient's bone mineral density to the average peak density of healthy young adults.
Risk Factors for Osteoporosis
Includes age, body build, family history, medication use, gender, ethnicity, inactivity, and lifestyle factors such as tobacco and alcohol use.
Clinical Manifestations of Osteoporosis
Signs of osteoporosis include decreased height, postural changes (kyphosis), back pain, and increased fracture risk.
Vertebral Compression Fractures
Fractures that can lead to decreased quality of life, pain, and increased risk of further fractures.
Bisphosphonates
Medications often used to treat osteoporosis by decreasing bone resorption.
