Mitosis
Part of eukaryotic cell division during which cell nucleus divides

Prophase
Chromosomes become visable, nuclear envelop dissolves, spindle forms

Metaphase
second phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell

Anaphase
the third phase of mitosis, during which the chromosome pairs separate and move toward opposite poles

Telophase
fourth and final phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes begin to disperse into a tangle of dense material

Cytokinesis
division of the cytoplasm during cell division

Cell Cycle
series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide

Interphase
period of the cell cycle between cell divisions (G1, S, G2)

G1
The phase is a period of activity in which cells do most of their growing.

S Phase
DNA replication

G2
Preparation for mitosis; During the phase, many of the organelles and molecules required for cell division is produced.

Chromosomes
condensed DNA found in nuclei of cells

Chromatids
one of two identical "sister" parts of a duplicated chromosome

Centromere
area where the chromatids of a chromosome are attached

Chromatin
granular material visible within the nucleus; consists of DNA tightly coiled around proteins

Diploid
cross involving alleles of two traits
2(n)

Haploid
half the number of chromosomes in a somatic cell; number of chromosomes in a gamete
(n)

Somatic
body cell; diploid; Divide by mitosis to make exact copies; In every tissue except reproductive tissue

Homologous Chromosomes
similar; (chromosomes) pair, one from each parent

Meiosis
process by which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through the separation of homologous chromosomes in a diploid cell

Gametes
Specialized cell involved in sexual reproduction

Daughter Cells
either of the two cells formed when a cell undergoes cell division by mitosis.

Crossing Over
exchange of segments of genes between homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis

Independent Assortment
random separation of homologous chromosomes into gametes
