Relief sculpture

A three dimensional image or design whose flat background surface is carved away to a certain depth.

In the round

Freestanding with all sides shown.

Sunken relief

When the image is carved below the original surface of the background.

Subtractive

A mass that is larger than the finished work, then removing away the mass until the work is finished; carving is subtractive.

Additive

Opposite of subtractive.

Terracotta

Cooked earth, type of fired clay, can be glazed.

Lost wax process

A metal casting method in which a wax model is melted and lost, leaving a cavity into which molten metal is poured.

Patina

The coloring that may occur on metal sculptures naturally as a result of aging.

Polychrome

Painted with many colors.
