Spinal nerves
Nerves that take impulses to and from the spinal cord.
Dorsal root
Structure that conducts impulses toward the spinal cord.
Ventral root
Structure that conducts impulses away from the spinal cord.
ANS
The system that controls involuntary bodily functions and consists of the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) and Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS).
Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)
Division of the ANS associated with Rest and Digest.
Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)
Division of the ANS associated with Fight or Flight.
Acetylcholine
Neurotransmitter released by the PNS that slows breathing and heart rate, and stimulates digestion, salivation, and urination.
Norepinephrine
Neurotransmitter released by the SNS that increases breathing and heart rate, and inhibits digestion, salivation, and urination.
White matter
Nervous tissue consisting of myelinated axons that allow communication over long distances.
Gray matter
Nervous tissue consisting of interneurons, cell bodies, and unmyelinated axons that integrate information.
