Flashcards covering examiner-level conceptual frameworks, Jacobean contextual links, and literary analysis for Macbeth.
Microcosm vs. Macrocosm
An analytical lens demonstrating how the darkness in Macbeth's mind (microcosm) manifests physically as unnatural storms, dark skies, and eclipses across Scotland (macrocosm).
Microcosm
The small-scale, internal human world—specifically represented in the play by the darkness inside Macbeth's mind.
Macrocosm
The larger universe or external natural order, seen manifesting across Scotland through unnatural storms, dark skies, and eclipses.
Divine Right of Kings (Jacobean Context)
The Jacobean belief that the king was God's direct lieutenant on Earth, meaning that tampering with the monarch equated to snuffing out divine light.
The Fair/Foul Paradox (AO2)
A conceptual framework demonstrating that light is not always pure; for example, lightning in Act 1, Scene 1 is violent and destructive, mirroring how the Witches' "truths" blind Macbeth rather than enlighten him.
