Neurons
can be classified functionally
by the direction the neve pulse travels relative to the CNS.
sensory (Afferent)
carry impulses from sensory receptors into CNS
Motor (Efferent)
carry impulses away from the CNS to Muscles or Glands
Interneuron (Associate)
carry impulses within the CNS, typically multipolar neurons
Make up 99% of Neurons found in body
Neurons have several special characteristics
• Have a high metabolic rate
• Extreme longevity
• Nonmitotic
• Excitable
• Conductivity
