White Men Superiority
The belief that white people are superior to those of other races and thus should dominate them.
Russo-Japanese War
A war fought between Japan and Russia during 1904 and 1905 over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea, marking the first victory of an Asian country against a Western power in modern times.
Al-Imam
A magazine co-published between 1906 and 1908 (totaling 31 issues) by Syeikh Mohd. Tahir, Syed Syeikh, and Sheikh Mohd Salim al-Kalali that advocated Islamic reform, self-determination, and Malay socio-economic awareness.
Kaum Muda
The Young Generation group influenced by the Pan-Islamic movement that advocated Islamic reform based on the Quran and Sunnah, and urged Malays to empower themselves with knowledge in science, mathematics, and technology.
Pan-Islamic Movement
A political ideology advocating the unity of Muslims under one Islamic country, state, or caliphate to confront European colonization and imperial domination.
Kesatuan Melayu Singapura
The Singapore Malay Union, founded in May 1926 by Mohamed Eunos bin Abdullah and Tengku Abdul Kadir Eunos to unite the Malays and voice their socio-economic aspirations.
Mohamed Eunos bin Abdullah
A nationalist intellectual remembered as the father of modern Malay journalism, who represented the Malay community in the Legislative Council and co-founded Kesatuan Melayu Singapura.
Great Depression of 1929
A severe worldwide economic depression originating in the United States that exposed Malay economic hardship and reliance on middlemen and money-lenders.
Persatuan Melayu Se-Malaya
The Pan-Malayan Malay Union, established following an August 1939 congress in Kuala Lumpur to unite the Malay population and protect their socio-economic and educational interests.
Kesatuan Melayu Muda (KMM)
The Young Malays Union, formed in 1938 out of Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI); it was the first radical, non-cooperative Malay political organization opposed to British rule.
Ibrahim bin Haji Yaacob
The leader and first president of the KMM who advocated revolution to end British colonialism and sought a political union with Dutch colonial territories.
Indonesia Raya
Also known as Melaya Raya, a proposed political union of Malaya with Dutch colonial territories in Indonesia.
Kesatuan Rakyat Indonesia Semenanjung (KRIS)
The Union of Indonesian Peninsular People, formed by KMM leaders during the Japanese occupation to strive for the independence and unification of Malaya and Indonesia.
Persaudaraan Sahabat Pena Malaya (PASPAM)
An apolitical society registered in 1935 (originally Persatuan Sahabat Pena, founded in 1934 by readers of the Saudara newspaper) aimed at furthering Malay rights and social advancement.

Not interested or involved in politics.
Plural Society
A diverse society with various ethnic groups that mix but do not combine, each maintaining its own distinct religion, culture, language, and lifestyle within the same political unit.
Boycott
The act of withdrawing from commercial or social relations with a country, organisation, or person as a form of protest or punishment.
Vernacular Language
The native language or dialect spoken by people inhabiting a particular country or region.
Propaganda
Biased or misleading information used to promote a political cause or point of view, such as the Japanese slogan 'Asia for Asians'.
United Malay National Organisation (UMNO)
An organization formed by Malays as they grew conscious of being the rightful heirs of Malaya and sought to preserve their rights after the Second World War.
