1888-1893
New Unionism
a rebellion of unskilled workers founding their own unions for the first time (seamen, gas workers, dockers.)
start of the mvmt
1888 with matchgirls’ strike organised by SDF member Annie Besant (severe health complications from working with white phosphorus)
Union of Women Matchmakers
Formed in 1888 as a result of the strike, on its creation it was the largest union of women and girls in the country.
Start of the spread of the mvmt
summer 1889: wave of collective organising among industrial workers inspired by matchgirls.
Gas workers
Led by Will Thorn, just threat of a strike and obtained a concession: 8h-day.
Dockers
August 1889: month-long strike in London (biggest port in the world paralysed), supported by Australian workers. Concession obtained: regularity of employment (recruited for half a day minimum).
Ben Tillett prominent leader of the strike: formed the Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Laborers’ Union in 1889, 30 000 members.
