Vocabulary practice flashcards covering diffusion mechanisms, temperature effects on particles, thermal expansion, and mercury barometer principles from the Unit 2 Practice Quiz.
Gas diffusion
The movement of gas particles from an area of higher (most) concentration to an area of lower (least) concentration.
Mechanism of diffusion
The process by which particles spread out as a direct result of random collisions between them.
Temperature and diffusion rate
The principle that diffusion (such as food coloring dispersing in liquid) occurs faster in hot water than in cold water.
Thermal expansion in thermometers
The behavior where alcohol particles in a thermometer expand rather than contract to a smaller volume when exposed to a hot environment.
Standard atmospheric pressure
The standard pressure measured by a mercury barometer, equal to 760mmHg.
Mercury barometer components
The primary elements required to measure atmospheric pressure: a column of mercury, a vacuum above the column, and external air particles exerting pressure.
