what is mitosis?
type of cell division that happens in body cells - any cell except those that produces gametes (s*x cells)
mitosis divides ______ cell and forms two new cells called _____ cells
parent
daughter
what’s special about the two cells mitosis produce?
they’re genetically identical
they contain diploid chromosomes (two sets of)
what are stages of mitosis?
Interphase
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
cytokinesis
what happens during interphase?
at the end of interphase, chromosomes starts to become visible, as DNA’s been copied.
what happens during prophase?
each chromosome has two chromatids
the nuclear membrane breaks down
which allows spindle fibres to form and attach to chromosomes
what happens during metaphase?
chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell, called equator.
what happens during anaphase?
the chromatids separate and one chromatid from each pair is pulled to each pole of the cell.
what happens during telophase?
spindle fibres disappears
new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes
the chromosomes uncoil and are no longer visible
what happens in cytokinesis?
cytoplasm divides
cell splits into two genetically identical diploid daughter cells
