1/11
Vocabulary flashcards covering plant anatomy, the process of photosynthesis, and plant reproduction mechanisms according to SOL 4.2.
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants trap energy from sunlight and use chlorophyll, carbon dioxide, and water to produce food (sugar), releasing oxygen as a byproduct.
Chlorophyll
The green pigment found in leaves that plants use along with carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to produce food (sugar).
Roots
Plant anatomical structures that anchor the plant and take in water and nutrients from the soil.
Stem
The anatomical structure that provides support to the plant and allows the movement of water and nutrients.
Leaves
The primary anatomical food-producing parts of green plants and the primary sites for photosynthesis.
Flower
The reproductive structure of a flowering plant.
Seeds
Structures formed during the reproductive process of flowering plants through which most plants reproduce.
Pollination
The process by which pollen is transferred from the stamen to the pistil by wind, water, or animals.
Stamen
The male reproductive structure of a flower where pollen is made.
Pistil
The female reproductive structure of a flower that receives pollen.
Stigma
The tip of the pistil where pollen lands during pollination.
Petal
The part of a flower whose color and scent attract insects and other pollinators.
