Vocabulary flashcards covering Albert Bandura's observational learning theory, modelling steps, and self-managed behaviour techniques including the Premack Principle and methods to break bad habits.
Model
Someone who serves as an example.
Modelling or Observational Learning
Learning that occurs by watching and imitating actions of another person or by noting consequences of a person's actions, occurring before direct practice is allowed.
Albert Bandura
The psychologist who created modelling theory with classic Bo-Bo Doll (inflatable clown) experiments.
Bo-Bo Doll Experiments
Classic experiments utilizing an inflatable clown that were used by Albert Bandura to establish modelling theory.
Steps to Successful Modelling
A four-step process: (1) Pay attention to model, (2) Remember what was done, (3) Reproduce modelled behaviour, and (4) Behaviour is more likely to recur if a model is successful or his/her behavior is rewarded.
Premack Principle
Any high frequency response used to reinforce a low frequency response (e.g., no GameBoy until you finish your homework).
Self-Recording
Self-management based on keeping records of response frequencies.
Behavioural Contract
A formal written contract stating behaviours to be changed and consequences that apply.
Alternate Responses
A method to break bad habits by trying to get the same reinforcement with a new response.
Extinction (Habit Breaking)
A method to break bad habits by trying to discover what is reinforcing an unwanted response and removing, avoiding, or delaying the reinforcement.
Response Chains
A method to break bad habits by scrambling the chain of events that leads to an undesired response.
Cues and Antecedents
A method to break bad habits by trying to avoid, narrow down, or remove stimuli that elicit the bad habit.
Behavioural Contracting Steps
The process of stating a specific problem behaviour to control or goal to achieve; stating rewards, forfeited privileges, or punishments; and typing the contract, signing it, and having a trusted person sign it.
