Fuel System
The complete path the fuel takes from its source to the appliance burner.
Utility Natural Gas System
A system where the building is supplied by a gas utility through an underground service line to a meter/regulator set.
LP Gas System
A liquefied petroleum gas system that uses propane stored in cylinders or a bulk tank.
Fuel Oil System
A system that uses an on-site oil tank feeding an oil burner via an oil line, pump, and filter.
Natural Gas
A gaseous fuel primarily consisting of methane, delivered through utility piping.
Propane
A heavy gas stored as a liquid under pressure that vaporizes upon release.
Combustion Air
Air required for the combustion process of fuel-burning appliances.
Check Valve
A valve that prevents backflow in a fuel oil system.
Sediment Trap
A short vertical section intended to collect debris before it enters the appliance gas valve.
Manual Shutoff Valve
A hand-operated valve used to isolate an appliance or section for service.
Black Steel Pipe
Traditional material for natural gas/propane building piping known for durability.
CSST
Corrugated stainless steel tubing providing flexible piping for gas distribution.
Elbows
Fittings used to change the direction of piping.
Union
A separable joint that allows for the removal of equipment without cutting the pipe.
Flared Joint
A joint that seals by compressing a formed flare of tubing against a fitting cone.
Pressure Test
A test checking whether the piping system holds pressure without leaking.
Operational Test
A test checking whether appliances ignite and run properly under normal conditions.
Bubble Test
A localized leak detection method using soap solution to identify escaping gas.
Fuel Oil
A combustible liquid fuel, commonly used for heating, presenting different hazards from gaseous fuels.
Vibration Protection
Methods such as flexible connectors that prevent stress on piping systems due to appliance movement.
Gas Detector
An electronic device used to sniff for gas in the air, aiding in leak detection.
Caps and Plugs
Components that seal the end of a pipe; caps cover male threads while plugs fit into female threads.
Pipe Support
Hangers and structures used to prevent sagging and stress on fuel piping.
Regulator
A device that reduces and stabilizes pressure from the supply to the appliance requirements.
Oil Burner Supply Lines
Lines that include a tank shutoff valve, filtration, and carry oil to the burner.
Combustion Byproducts
Substances, such as carbon monoxide, produced during the combustion process of fuels.
Weight of Fuels
Natural gas is lighter than air while propane is heavier, affecting their accumulation behavior.
