Eating Disorder
A psychiatric disorder characterized by severe disturbances in body image and eating behaviors.
Disordered Eating
Atypical eating behaviors used to keep body weight low; these are not severe enough to classify as a formal eating disorder.
Body image
A person’s perception of their appearance.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder involves extreme dietary restriction leading to significantly low body weight, overwhelming distress about weight gain, and a disturbed perception of weight or shape.
Lanugo
A physical effect typically associated with Anorexia Nervosa characterized by the growth of fine, downy hair on the body.
Amenorrhea
The loss of menstruation, often a physical effect of Anorexia Nervosa.
Bulimia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging.
Binge eating (Bulimia)
Consuming an abnormally large amount of food, often more than 3,000kcal, within a short time period of approximately 2hours.
Compensatory behaviors
Actions taken to rid the body of excess calories, also known as purging, which include self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives, and excessive exercise.
Binge-Eating Disorder
A disorder involving repeated binge eating with a loss of control, not followed by purging, often resulting in being overweight or obese.
Orthorexia
An unhealthy obsession with healthy eating.
Physical effects of Anorexia Nervosa
Include low body temperature, low metabolic rate, loss of heart tissue, low bone mass, and iron-deficiency anemia.
Physical effects of Bulimia Nervosa
Include swollen salivary glands, dental decay, irritation of the esophagus, stomach ulcers, and blood potassium imbalance.
Physical effects of Binge Eating Disorder
Include hypertension, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis, and Type 2 diabetes.
