Phrase
A component of a clause that expresses a single idea but does not form a complete sentence.
Prepositional Phrase
A phrase that begins with a preposition and ends in a noun/pronoun/noun phrase.
Participial Phrase
A verb that functions as an adjective and ends in -ing (present) or -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne (past).
Gerund
A verb that functions as a noun and ends in -ing.
Infinitive
A form of verbs that can be used as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Appositive
A noun that immediately follows and renames another noun to clarify or classify it.
Dependent Clause
A group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought.
Independent Clause
A group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.
